Hillary Wins Virginia Primary
Congratulations to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her victory today in the Virginia Democratic Primary!
As United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton advocated for LGBT equality in the U.S. and abroad, saying, “gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”
According to her campaign website, Hillary Clinton will work to ensure full federal equality for all LGBT Americans; support LGBT kids, parents, and elders; and secure affordable treatment for people living with HIV and AIDS.
Of course, the race for the Democratic nomination isn’t over yet. Senator Bernie Sanders continues on, telling supporters via email that his campaign is already at work preparing for upcoming primaries and caucuses over the next two weeks.
Sanders has been a longtime supporter of LGBT equality, having voted against both “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 1993 and the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” in 1996. More information on his support for LGBT equality and protections can be found on his campaign website.
It’s important to remember that we’re not only electing a President this year, but also members Congress. LGBT Democrats of Virginia is starting to focus on key congressional races where we think we can help make a difference. Are you willing to make a contribution to help us elect more LGBT friendly candidates to Congress?
Remember, it’s only when we are united that we will succeed and make a difference in the the lives of Virginians.
