New York Marriage Equality Vote: A Message For Virginia
Last night the New York state legislature voted to recognize marriage equality in New York, and Governor Andrew Cuomo immediately signed the bill into law, making the state of New York the 6th in the nation to legalize same-sex marriage. We applaud the New York state legislature and Governor Cuomo (D) for taking this historic step for equality.
In reaction to the vote, Tiffany M. Joslyn, President of Virginia Partisans PAC, said, “Tonight’s victory in New York brings us one step closer to a nation of equality. To those here in Virginia on the wrong side of history, let this be a lesson – equality will win out and the LGBT Democrats of Virginia will not tire until this battle is won. We ask every Virginian who believes in a just and fair society to stand with us, whether LGBT or Ally, in our fight to keep the Senate Blue this November, to support and elect pro-equality Democrats, and to demonstrate once and for all that bigotry and intolerance has no place in our great Commonwealth.”
Please help elect pro-equality Democrats this year by either purchasing a Host Committee sponsorship or tickets to the Virginia Partisans 40-for-40 fundraiser, or making a contribution to the event if you can’t attend. With your support, we can move Virginia closer to joining the ranks of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York in making marriage equality legal.
As always, we thank you for all you’ve done to support LGBT Democrats of Virginia. Together, we can make a difference, but this fight is not over and your support is crucial to bringing equality to Virginia. We are proud that with the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York, our nation is one major step forward to realizing it’s potential as a nation where we truly believe in what was “self evident” to Virginia’s own Thomas Jefferson and the founders of the United States: “that all men are created equal”.
