Endorsed Candidates 3: Donald McEachin Fighting for LGBT+ Equality

Donald McEachin was elected to Congress in 2016, and soon after was elected co-president of the freshman class of the 115th United States Congress. Before he was elected to Congress, Donald McEachin spent most of the last 20 years serving in the Virginia General Assembly – first in the Virginia House of Delegates and then in the Virginia State Senate, in addition to founding a law firm, McEachin and Gee, in 2006.

As a freshman member of Congress for the past two years, he’s worked hard to advocate for the environment under a hostile presidential administration, and find issues that generate bipartisan support to try to bring the houses together. In an interview with Quorum Congressman McEachin showed exactly why he has run for every office he has sought, when he stated, “contact us, we want to help”, when asked about his constituents. Simply put, he cares about those he serves. He knows he is elected at their discretion to do the work of the people he represents, and he intends to do that work as well as he possible can.

He also felt that it was important to acknowledge the one year anniversary of the events in Charlottesville, saying in an MSNBC interview, “I wish I could say ‘never again,” but I recognize we have a long way to go to remove the hate and prejudice in our country and in our communities.”

Earlier this summer, he introduced, with Congressman John Faso, the Lead-Safe Housing for Kids Act of 2018, which will help protect children living in federally assisted housing from lead exposure.

Since his election on November 8th, 2016, McEachin has proved himself to be a trustworthy champion of progressive values. Most relevant to LGBT+ voters, he supports anti-discrimination legislation. He also supports automatic voter registration to protect our right to vote and expand it to as many eligible voters as possible. Congressman McEachin is a member of both the LGBT Equality Caucus and the House Pro-Choice Caucus, and has been a member of the LGBT Democrats of Virginia for many years. Congressman McEachin has gone out of his way to assist a fledging LGBT Democrats of Virginia group when we were first established, and has continued to assist us whenever he has been asked. He has served as emcee of many of our fundraisers.

Congressman McEachin grew up in the 4th District and lives there with his wife, who is also an attorney. He is the proud father of three children.
